Patrick Larry Pagel, his friends called him "Pappy," age 71, of Madison, passed away on Monday, August 30, 2010, at Meriter Park Hospital after a long and courageous fight with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, a lung disease for which there is no cure, and recently diagnosed prostate cancer.

One word described Patrick - Fun! He had fun in everything he did. Even if he was doing the most mundane or unpleasant, he always managed to find some way to make it fun for himself, and others too. He loved life and lived it to the fullest, second to none. To him, every day was a zip-a-de-do-da-day.

At the age of 10, he received national recognition for saving the life of a schoolmate when he pulled him from the frigid waters of the Yahara River following a sledding accident.

During his sophomore year at Wisconsin High School, Pappy joined the Army Reserve and upon his graduation in 1957, began active duty at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He was a member of the Army Reserves for eight and a half years. He attended the University of Wisconsin Journalism School.

Pat was employed by Madison Newspapers from 1959 until 1976, as a printer and served as president of the Madison Typographical Union - Madison Chapter of the Milwaukee Typographical Union from 1970 to 1979. He also worked part-time teaching printing at Madison Area Technical College. He was a salesman for Elmquist Electronics-Benchmark Security Systems from 1973 to 1976. He also was employed as bar manager at Okee Lodge in Lodi, and tended bar at the Towne Pump in Verona. From 1977 to 1980 he was employed by Wisconsin Physicians Service as a forms manager and started working at the State of Wisconsin where he retired after 20 years of service. He was employed for 17 years in the Department of Industry, Labor and Human Relations, now known as the Department of Workforce Development. He was a member of the Business Forms Management Association for several years and served one year as president. He served as union president for Local 145, ASFCME, Council 24 for 15 years and appeared before the United States President's Committee to testify on Labor-Management relations in Wisconsin. Upon his retirement, he was honored by Governor Scott McCallum for his union accomplishments.

Patrick was an active member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and served as a member of the parish council, ushered and volunteered for many committees. Patrick was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus, Father Lawrence Korback Council 10893 beginning in 1992, where he served as recording secretary from 1995 to 1997 and Grand Knight from 1997 to 1999 and 2001 to 2005. He was a fourth degree member of the Bishop William P. O'Connor Assembly 1200 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. He was also a member of the K of C Clowns and appeared in many parades throughout the state. His sense of humor remained with him until his passing. He will be missed.

Patrick is survived by his wife, Joan Pagel and two sons, Noel and Travis Pagel, all of Madison; his previous wife, Judith Pagel and their children, daughter, Deb (Jon) Stolz and grandchildren, Nolan and Matt of Milwaukee, son, Scott (Patti) Pagel and grandchildren, Ryne, Morgan and Jennifer of Appleton and daughter, Julie (John) Thomasen and grandchildren, Jeff and Kylie of Waunakee; a cousin, Mary Cullinane-Esch of Madison; and his canine companions, Libby and Joey.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Anne on January 30, 2002, and his father, Larry on February 11, 2002.
