Valeska Lynne Lindner, an avid runner, dancer, gardener, and cook, died at her home on February 11, 2011, of colon cancer.

Born on January 12, 1943, in Dayton, Ohio, she was raised in nearby Yellow Springs in a family that epitomized the village's progressive politics and idealism. Her parents, dedicated to the cooperative and homesteading movements, raised Valeska and four siblings among animals and an abundant garden.

In the early 1960s, she met Robert Lindner at a folk dance in Yellow Springs, and they married in 1965. They lived in San Francisco for a time, then moved to Fort Collins in 1975 to escape city life. Before divorcing in 1993, they raised three children together.

Though she never lived in the country again after leaving Ohio, Valeska tended vegetables (tomatoes were a particular favorite), planted fruit trees, foraged mushrooms, preserved food, and baked bread throughout her life.

Naturally outgoing and enthusiastically helpful, she worked in recent years at Alfalfa's, Wild Oats Market, and Downtown Ace Hardware, as much, she said, for the satisfaction of helping customers as for the pay.

Valeska was familiar to many as a regular at the Fort Collins Club. A member from its opening, she arrived most mornings before 6 to run with friends. She was also active in local contra dance groups, and was known for the elaborate spreads of food she arranged for dances.

Known as Lynne for most of her life, she switched to Valeska, in honor of her mother, Valeska Becker Appleberry, after the older Valeska died in 2006.

She is survived by her siblings, Brian, Kim, Erik and Karen Appleberry; her children, Kirsten Woy, Derek Lindner, and Daniel Lindner; and three grandchildren.
