Paul Wilke Jurney, 83, of Union Grove, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. He was born March 30, 1926, in Iredell County to the late Houston Allison and Winnie Hoots Jurney. A proud World War II veteran, Mr. Jurney served his country in the U. S. Navy. He was injured during battle in the Philippines, after a kamikaze plane hit the USS Allen M. Sumner Super Destroyer, and he received the Purple Heart. He served for 40-plus years with the Buck Shoals, West Yadkin and Harmony volunteer fire departments. He was also an active member of the Ruritan Club and was a deacon at Zion Baptist Church. He had a fond love for Blue Grass music and helped organize what turned into weekly Blue Grass jams at the Windsor Crossroads Community Center near his home. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth Hayes. Surviving are his wife of 62-plus years, Thelma Snow Jurney; children, Levora (Richard) Bruce, Linda (Jerry) Stout, Loretta (Todd) Bolin, Larry Jurney; grandchildren, Conan Bruce, Ginger Thomasson, April Stephens, Brian Stout, K. Mac Heffner Jr., Chris Bolin, Courtney Bolin; nine great- grandchildren; sister, Mary Bell; brothers, Roy (Reda) Jurney, Francis Jurney, Rondal (Judy) Jurney; special friend, Olav Allred; several nieces and nephews. His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Joey Tomlin officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. He will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Yadkinville.
