The following biography was written by her great-grandson, Don Ludwig:

Ida Auguste Köhler was born on March 1, 1868 in Ranis/Thüringen, Germany, the fourth child of Heinrich Christian Wilhelm Köhler and his wife, née "Friedericke" Karoline Friedericke Sophie Riedel. She was baptized on March 8, 1868 in the Evangelical church in Ranis. She was raised in Ranis and spent her entire life in Ranis and nearby Krölpa. She was married on October 11, 1891 in Ranis to Karl Ferdinand Erdmann Ludwig. Ida died on September 12, 1961 in Krölpa and was laid to rest beside her husband.

Ida and Karl had ten children:
1. "Arthur" Karl Arthur Ludwig (who stayed in Germany and lived in Naumburg).
2. Arno Arthur Ludwig (who immigrated to the USA in 1927 and lived in Poughkeepsie, NY).
3. "Frido" Friedo Arno Ludwig (who immigrated to the USA in 1923 and lived in Manhattan, dying in 1939).
4. Milda Frieda (Ludwig) Mueller (who immigrated to the USA in 1925 and lived in Manhattan, northern NJ and later Washington DC).
5. "Paul" Friedo Paul Ludwig (who immigrated to the USA in 1925 and lived in Manhattan and New Gretna, NJ).
6. "Dora" Ida Dora (Ludwig) Deubel (who immigrated to the USA in 1927 and lived in Manhattan, dying on her 30th birthday in 1928).
7. "Kurt" Karl Kurt Ludwig (who died in Krölpa at age 1 year, 9 months and 5 days).
8. "Gertrud" Martha Gertrud (Ludwig) Roth Herrmann (who stayed in Germany and lived in Pößneck).
9. Irene Elsa (Ludwig) Drechsel (who stayed in Germany and lived in Pößneck).
