Mathias was born in Willow Lake township near Wanda in Redwood county, MN. He was the son of Christian and Anna Ross Turbes (see family pictures).

In addition to those listed below, Mathias' siblings were:

Mathias married Lydia Dorthea Yackel on November 9, 1914. In addition to those listed below, they had a daughter Marion Dorthey (Freeman) (*12/23/1923)

Mr. Turbes studied at Mankato Commercial College in 1908 and was employed by the Western Elevator Co. in Wanda, MN for three years. He was then employed by O. C. Kuehn of Wanda for two years in the general merchandise business.

In the fall of 1914 he bought the stock of Fossom and Hallum, merchants in Walnut Grove where he became the proprietor of a general merchandise store. According to 1940 census information, Mathias was employed by the WPA. He resided in Walnut Grove until his death.
