LAUREL — William "Bill" Branstetter passed away March 13, 2011, on the farm where he was born 81 years ago on Sept. 20, 1929. He was born to William Clay and Annie (Nagel) Branstetter. He grew up on the farm with five siblings. He attended grade school at Sunny Valley Country School near the farm. He graduated from Laurel High School in 1947.
He married Phyllis Arline Dyrud in 1950 in Conrad. They lived on the farm for all of their 60 years of marriage, where they raised three children, and enjoyed the visits of nieces and nephews and then grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He worked various jobs along with the farm work; in 1958, he started working for the U.S. Postal service as a rural mail carrier. He retired in 1990 with 32 years of service; he also retired from farming in that year.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Irma (Shay), Roscoe, Inez (Harper), and Myrtle (Arnold). He is survived not only by his wife, Phyllis; son Greg (Alice) of Laurel; daughters Janice (Neil) Andersen of Reserve and Doreen (John) Gates of Billings; and brother Elmer of Laurel; but also by eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, as well as many nephews, nieces and cousins.
Funeral services will be Monday, March 21, at 2 p.m., at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Laurel, with interment in the Laurel Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 20, at Smith Funeral Chapel-Laurel.
