Mary Ann "Mollie" Drummond was born Jan. 20, 1846 in the town of Marcellus in Onondaga County, NY, the 5th of 10 children of John and Catherine (Walker) Drummond. Her siblings were: James born 1838, Martha 1840, John #1 1841, William 1844, Jane 1848, Ruth 1850, John #2 1852, Rebecca 1855, and Henry 1857.

Her parents were both immigrants - he from Dumfries, Scotland and she from Dungannon, Ireland - who met in Montreal, Canada and married there on Aug. 31, 1837. They moved from Canada to Onondaga County, NY about 1838 and had their first 7 children there. Then about 1854 they moved to Pine Village in Warren County, IN where their last 3 children were born. Finally, in 1870 they moved to Labette Co., Kansas where they had acquired land to "homestead". Most of their children followed them to Kansas and were also homesteaders. Mollie's father worked as a butcher in Scotland, Canada, New York, and Indiana, then became a farmer in Kansas.

Mollie grew up in Pine Village, IN and at some point met Dr. Lewis Curtis "L.C." or "Doc" Messner whose family lived nearby. They married in 1866 (she was 20 and he 21) and then moved to Potomac, IL where Lewis started a medical practice. Mollie and Lewis had 3 children: Nellie Maude "Nelle" born 12/3/1866, Alma born in 1868 but died as a baby in 1869, and William Curtis "Will" born in 1870.

Sadly, Mollie died in 1872 at age 26 and was buried in the Potomac cemetery next to her baby, Alma. Lewis remarried in 1873 and his second wife was a good stepmother to Nellie and Will who were only 5 and 1 when Mollie died. Lewis had a total of 4 wives before he died in 1928 and was buried in the same plot as Mollie. Nellie and Will were also buried near their parents when they died - Will in 1930 and Nellie in 1952.
