He married Martha Auernhammer on June 23, 1946. She predeceased him.
He married Margaret Rodammer on April 30, 1965. Herbert was a member of St. Lorenz Lutheran Church.
He was a farmer and also employed by Frankenmuth Bank & Trust.
Surviving are his wife Margaret, his five children; Judy (Richard) Weiss of Freeland, Beth (Forrest) Dankert of Reese, Nila (Randal) Schiefer of Bridgeport, Christine (Allen) Holcomb of Saginaw, and Mark (Becky) Grueber of Canton, two step-children; Rosemary (Michael) Thomas of Okemos and Fred (Erin) Rodammer of East Lansing.
Also surviving are 10 grandchildren; Jackie (Mike) Town, Susan (Shawn) Barbeau, Sara (Jason) Henry, Jessica (Aaron) Simon, Brian Schiefer, Brent (Jessica) Dankert, Ryan, Alex & Elise Holcomb, Emma Grueber, 4 step-grandchildren; Carrie Thomas, Jon Rodammer, and Lauren & Alyssa Rodammer, 6 great grandchildren; one sister, Emma Bender and one brother-in-law, Rudy Hetzner.
Herbert was predeceased by two sisters; Laura Palmreuter and Hulda Hetzner and a brother Walter Grueber.
