A celebration of life for Joseph Herbert Nies of Ajo, Ariz., will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday at the home of Dale and Linda Nies, 12406 Sluice Box Road, Penn Valley. There will be a potluck luncheon after the service.

Burial will be at Indian Springs Cemetery. Mr. Nies died April 26 in Penn Valley at the age of 77.

He was born Oct. 9, 1926, in Seattle, Wash., to Joseph and May Nies. He graduated from San Jose State University with a bachelor's degree in education/industrial arts and served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He married Clarice in Seattle on Sept. 26, 1947.

Mr. Nies was a general contractor for 40 years and a member of the Presbyterian Church in Ajo. He enjoyed playing the banjo, singing in the church choir, being a practical joker, and writing poetry.

He is survived by his wife, Clarice Navonne Nies of Ajo; sons and daughters-in-law Dale and Linda Nies of Penn Valley and Paul and Donna Nies of Cedar Ridge; grandsons and granddaughters-in-law Tyler and Noelle Nies of Hillsboro, Ore., and Samuel and Mary Nies of Redding; grandson Levi Nies of Cedar Ridge; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Rebecca and Mark Panjwani of Beverly, Mass.; granddaughter, Jessica Nies of Santa Clara; and sisters Carol Syverson of Michigan and Joyce Nies of Texas. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dee Phillips.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Central American Mission. Arrangements are under the direction of Chapel of the Angels Mortuary, Grass Valley.
