Funeral services for Helen Marie Beard Laake, 68, of Paige, Texas were held on Saturday April 26, 2003 at Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Giddings, Texas with Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Lien officiating. Burial followed in the Friendship cemetery at Hills, Texas. Pallbearers were nephews, David Beard, Dennis Beard, Rodney Beard, David Laake, Eddie Pinnell, Grandson, Troy Hirsch.

Helen was born on April 24, 1934 to Tommy and Amanda Moses Beard in Lexington, Texas. Helen was called home on April 22, 2003 while in surgery at St. David's Hospital in Austin, Texas.

Helen wed Weldon Leo Laake on Feb. 2, 1957. Helen worked as a waitress in Giddings prior to relocating to Houston in 1958 where she continued waitressing until she began employment with Texas Instruments in 1973. Helen was blessed with a son, Tommy, and a daughter, Brenda. Helen relocated to Paige, Texas in the 1980's and retired from Texas Instruments in Austin in 1993.

Helen was baptized and confirmed in Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Giddings in 1952. Helen was later a member of Zion Lutheran and Advent Lutheran in Houston and returned to Martin Luther Lutheran in Giddings. Helen was described as a "firecracker" with lots of spirit, in her youth, by nephew, Dennis Goerner. Her favorite activities included dancing, camping and fishing and a good game of 42 just to name a few. In 1997, she became "Nana" to her precious granddaughter, Cassidy Hirsch. In 1998, she became "Nana Helen" to great grandaughter, Delaney Hirsch. The most cherished titles of her entire life.

Surviving relatives: husband Leo Laake of Paige, daughter Brenda and son-in-law Mike Hirsch of Northrup, granddaughter Cassidy Hirsch of Northrup, grandson Troy Hirsch of Giddings, greatgranddaughter Delaney Hirsch of Ledbetter, honorary grandchildren Shauna Le France, Jeffrey and Jason Orts, sister Louise Langham of Porter, sister-in-laws Jessie Beard of Lexington, Lydia Kastner of Giddings, Inez Laake of Bastrop, Doris Laake of Paige, Amanda Laake of Houston, Elnora and Maston Goerner of Katy, Lorene Pinnell of Dallas, brother-in-law Anton L.D.A. Koyck of Virginia Beacg, much loved nieces and nephews, treasured friend Erna.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents Tommy and Amanda, son Tommy Eric Laake, sisters Alice and Alpha, brother Harles Beard, brother-in-laws Calvin Langham, Leonard Kastner, Alfred Laake, Emil Laake, Charlie Pinnell, sister-in-law Leona & Paul Saegert, sister-in-laws Lillian Koyck, Amanda Watson, Parent-in-laws Anton & Ella Laake.

Helen's sweet smile will shine forth through the lives she touched.
