A service will be private for Herbert Frank Eisenschmidt of St. Helens, who died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 1996, of causes related to age. He was 89.

Mr. Eisenschmidt was born Nov. 16, 1906, in Leipzig, Germany. He spent most of his childhood in Portland, where he graduated from Jefferson High School. In 1934, he graduated from Oregon Agricultural College, now Oregon State University.

He taught physical education, health, science and driver's education for the St. Helens School District. He coached wrestling and swimming and was a trainer in several other sports.

He married Alta Louise Holland on July 25, 1935.

On his retirement in 1972, he began swimming competitively, holding several state and world records in his age group.

Survivors, besides his wife, include a son, Kurt of St. Helens; daughter, Karen Goetsch of St. Helens; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
