"Art" Arthur Eugene Afrons born in Akron, Ohio was the three time land speed record holder from 1964 to 1965 with his jet powered - "Green Monster". The Green Monster was a series of Jet powered and Piston engine drag racers, know round the world.
Mr. Arfons along with his brother Walt, first started experimenting with jet – powered cars in 1962, his work and his training in the Navy came in handy. He is still credited with making and operating the fastest open cockpit vehicle on record at 330.113 miles per hour.
Arfons was also known for trying to make drag racing as safer. He invented two important safety devices that have since been made mandatory for drag racers: the overhead roll cage and the parachute.
In 2008, Art was an Iductee to the International Motorsports Hall of Fame.
Art was a served in the Navy during WWII and where he used and honed his mechanical skills in the Pacific Theater, leaving the service as a Petty Officer Second Class.
