Funeral services for Spencer Lenard Austin, Grand Ronde grocer, were conducted her Friday afternoon. He died January 15 in Grand Ronde at the age of 41 years.

Mrs. Austin was born June 22, 1916, in Fredrick, S.D., the son of Mabel Turnquist and Marvin A. Spencer. As a young boy, with his family, he came to the Carlton-Yamhill area, where he attended school. He was a graduate of the barber college in Portland and was a barber for a few years. He was married to Frances Klees in Vancouver, Wash., on October 14, 1941.

From January 9, 1942 until December 19, 1945, he served with the United States Army. He served overseas with the 301st Railhead company in the South Pacific from July 4, 1944, until November 21, 1945.

Mr. Austin operated a grocery store in Perrydale for a year. For the last 7 ½ years, he has operated Spec’s grocery store in Grand Ronde.
