Mr. Cramer graduated from Petersburg Harris High School in 1933. He started in the machinery business in 1934 in Greenview, selling Allis Chambers and New Idea machinery and DeSoto and Plymouth automobiles. He told of selling the first rubber tired tractor and AC Row Crop combine in 1934 and the first New Idea corn pickers in 1936, beginning the first mechanical harvesting of crops. Horses and mules were often traded for tractors.
He was elected Menard County Commissioner two terms during which time the new Sunny Acres Home was built and expanded. He served as an Advisory Board Member of Sunny Acres for more than 42 years. The Menard County Health Department was founded and many of the County roads were paved with a new asphalt and sand surface. He was a member and president of the Elmwood Cemetery Board in Greenview for over 40 years, and in 1958 organized and served as president of the Menard County Cemetery District. Mr. Cramer helped organize and was president of the Greenview Community Bank for 20 years and served as an Advisory Board Member of the Illini Bank of Menard County, establishing branches in Greenview, Tallula, and Petersburg.
He was a member and past president of the Greenview Rotary Club and was the Club's first Paul Harris Fellow. Mr. Cramer was a charter member of the Greenview United Church.
A memorial visitation will be held at the Hurley Funeral home in Greenview from 9:30 am till 10:30 am on Saturday, February 26, 2011 with a service to follow. The Reverend Julie Wells Blythe will officiate. Interment will be at the Elmwood Cemetery in Greenview following services.
