Doris Ellen Axthelm

Doris Ellen Axthelm, 91, of North Platte, NE, died Friday, April 22, 2011, at Linden Court in North Platte. Doris was born on February 14, 1920, to Gust F. and Ellen C. Gustafson Anderson north of Gothenburg, NE, where she grew up with her sister, Jeanette. She attended schools in Gothenburg and graduated from Gothenburg High School. Doris later received a teaching degree from Kearney State College and taught at several country schools south of Gothenburg and at Platte Valley School northwest of North Platte. On July 19, 1944, Doris married Cecil A. Axthelm in Gothenburg and they lived in North Carolina while he was in the service. They later made their home in North Platte and had four children. They owned Number One Standard Station and in 1965 purchased the Cedar Lodge Motel which they operated for 27 years. When her children were young, Doris was a scout leader and a 4-H leader. She continued as a 4-H leader into her 80's guiding her grandchildren and many others. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher and faithfully attended Bible Studies. Doris was proud of her Swedish heritage and was active in the Swedish group. She made sure her grandkids were Santa Lucias and Star Boys. She loved to cook, sew, garden and take care of her many plants. Doris loved her family and the Lord.
Survivors include her three sons, Michael Axthelm, of Hillsboro, OR, Timothy (Mary) Axthelm, of North Platte and Mark (Steph) Axthelm, of Gothenburg; a daughter, Kylie (David) Young, of Jefferson City, MO; nine grandchildren, Fred Farr, Jamie (Jo Ellen) Axthelm, Jason (Sharon) Axthelm, Jenny (Steve) Skupa, Bradley (Sarah) Axthelm, Ian Young, Isaac Axthelm, Carson Young and Aaron Axthelm; 11 great-grandchildren, Shane (Susie) Farr, Chris Farr, Mackenzie Skupa, Alexa Axthelm, Rodger Farr, Sydney Skupa, Case Axthelm, Kate Axthelm, Abbie Skupa Ander Axthelm and Tristan Axthelm; two nephews, Greg and Steve Miller; her special friends including, Mike and Sally Ponte and Toni Dutton; and other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil; her parents, Gust and Ellen Anderson; her sister, Jeanette Miller; a daughter-in-law, Deborah Barber Axthelm; and a granddaughter, Donnie Kay Farr. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 29, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church with Dr. Douglas A. Delp officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. in the Peckham Cemetery south of Gothenburg. Visitation is 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Odean Colonial Chapel At C & Sycamore. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church or the donor's choice. Odean Colonial Chapel At C & Sycamore is in charge of arrangements.
