Margaret Barbara Grimm (from Baden, Germany) was the wife of Joseph Grimm (born August 2, 1788). They married in Germany and he died while still in Germany. Margaret and the following children: Johann (b:1827), Christian (b:1830), Maria (b:1833), Susanna (b;1833), and Barbara L.(b:1836) left for the USA and arrived in New York City on 23 Oct. 1854 on the ship MILWAUKEE with their mother. They had departed from Le Havre, France on this vessel. The eldest son Joseph (b:1824) arrived in America on July 2 , 1851 aboard the ship Isaac Bell. They soon settled in Lewis Township, Lewis County NY.

Christian and Joseph purchased farm land where the family moved onto until Margareta's death. Around 1864, Christian sold his portion of the farm to Joseph and moved to Peoria, IL.

Son, John M. Grimm, was a Cooper and had also purchased a farm where the family lived in Lewis Co., New York. After a few years, John left New York for Peoria, Illinois, where he found work making barrels for the distillery industry. John married Catherine Klein in Peoria, IL and had a daughter. Catherin died by the 1860 census.

Barbara also moved to Peoria to help her brother John raise his daughter after his wife's death around 1860.

The 1870 census lists John, Barbara and his daughter Louisa Grimm. (There is some confusion as to who Barbara is. Most research has shown that Barbara is John Grimm's younger sister. She relocated from Lewis County, New York to help raise Louisa.) John never remarries and is buried with his wife Catherine Klein Grimm at Springdale Cemetery in Peoria, Illinois.

After John dies in 1887, it appears that Barbara Grimm remains in Peoria, Illinois and works as a Dressmaker. Barbara was listed in the Peoria City Directories until 1894. In 1894 Barbara traveled back to Lewis County, New York to visit her niece Amelia Grimm Kotary (the daughter of Joseph Grimm and Barbara's oldest brother - Newspaper sources). After this visit, Barbara has not been able to be traced further (2024).

It is unknown where Margaret's husband, Joseph Grimm, is buried in Germany.
