Mary Ellen Grahn died Tuesday, January 31, 2006. She was born March 12, 1925 to Ira and Hazel Gumerson. Mary Ellen was a 1943 graduate of Emmerich Manual High School, Indianapolis, IN.
Mary Ellen is survived by her husband of 57 years, Raymond J. Grahn, by her children, Charles, and his wife, Barbara, her daughter, Eda, and her husband, Jeffrey A. Terp, and six grandchildren, Matt, Laura, Joe and Sarah Grahn, and Maggie and Andrew Terp. Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her parents and by brothers, William Gumerson, John Gumerson and Howard Gumerson.
Mary Ellen attended the Garfield Park United Church of Christ, where she was a member for more than sixty years, a leader and teacher, and where she formed many lifelong friendships. Mary Ellen enjoyed hosting women's Bible study groups in her home, which was also a frequent gathering place for family and friends. Otherwise her life was focused on her family with whom she shared regular weekend and Sunday afternoon dinners, which always included spirited but genial debates and discussions of current events. She and her husband gathered their family each Christmas holiday for vacations at various warm weather destinations, as well as some detours for snow skiing. Mary Ellen was a friend and neighbor to all persons she knew, a generous giver of her time, her treasure and her love.
Calling will be Friday, February 3, 2006 from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Garfield Park United Church of Christ, 743 E. Pleasant Run Parkway, South Drive, Indianapolis, Indiana, with funeral services following at 7:00 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, friends may donate to the Garfield Park United Church of Christ Memorial Fund or to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements have been entrusted to G.H. Herrmann Madison Ave. Funeral Home, 5141 Madison Ave.
