Nicholas Zyla, Sr., 87, formerly of 331 Candia Road, died March 12, 2002 at the Elliot Hospital. He was born in Manchester on December 19, 1914, the son of Felix and Theresa (Pilch) Zyla and had been a lifelong resident of the city. He owed and operated Zyla's Toy Store for over 40 years until his retirement. He loved flowers and gardening and would often bring flower bouquets to local nursing homes. He was a well known local musician and played with various bands. Over the past year, he used to entertain the residents at Hanover Hill Nursing Home. He was an avid bowler and won many tournaments. He also started a senior citizens softball league at Wolfe Park. He was predeceased by his wife, Yvonne M. (Thibodeau) Zyla and by a son, Nicholas Zyla, Jr., who both passed away in 1988. Family members include his daughter, Susan Gregoire of Manchester; three sons, Robert Zyla, William Zyla and David Zyla, all of Manchester; 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; a sister, Kay Maznek of FL; and several nephews, nieces and cousins. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
