Mary Lou was the only daughter of Henry and Helen Vonderheide. Her two older brothers were Bob and Jim, and the two younger, Tom and Charley. She graduated from Stewardson/Strasburg High School. She married Adolph Goeckner and they raised three sons and three daughters.
Like her mother, she was a splendid seamstress. She was a Home Interiors representative for many years and also worked as a nanny.
