Joseph Wessel, sr., 77, died at St. Francis hospital, Topeka, this morning after an extended illness.
He was born Oct. 21, 1896 in Oldenberg, Germany, a son of Henry and Elizabeth Wessel, and the family moved to Kansas when he was a boy.
Mr. Wessel and Freda Niehaues were married Aug. 24, 1927 at St. Bede's church in Kelley, and moved to a farm south of Effingham in 1940.
They retired from the farm and moved into Effingham in 1965.
He was a member of St. Ann's Church at Effingham and was the last surviving member of a family of 10 children.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Freda Wessel, of the home: a daughter, Mrs. Earl (Florence) Edward, Denver; five sons, Vincent Wessel, Frankfort, Joseph Wessel, jr., Leander Wessel and Jerry Wessel, all of Effingham and Thomas Wessel, Atchison, and 21 grandchildren.
