John Kirk, the son of Robert Kirk and Sarah Reid, was born in Glenwherry, Antrim County, Northern Ireland in 1847.

Two of John's brothers, James and Andrew, emigrated to the United States in 1851 and 1858, respectively, and their parents Robert and Sarah soon decided to follow them.

John, his siblings Eliza, Ellen, Ann, and William, and his parents Robert and Sarah (Reid) Kirk, sailed on the steamship "Jura" and arrived in Quebec, Canada in 1862. From there they traveled to Huron County, Ontario, Canada.

Later in 1862 John, his parents, and his siblings Ellen, Ann, and William moved to Fairgrove Township, Tuscola County, Michigan where John's brothers Andrew and James had previously settled. John's sister Eliza had married William McAllister in Huron County, Ontario, but they did not join the family in Michigan until 1864. Another sister, Sarah, had remained in Northern Ireland and married Robert McLuney there. In 1863 they also emigrated and settled in Fairgrove, Michigan.

Still another of John's sisters, Isabelle, stayed behind in Northern Ireland with her husband, and she later died there, leaving eight children.

John's sister Jennie had married John "Billy" Rae in Northern Ireland; they emigrated with their son to Australia where they had six more children. After John Rae's death, Jennie married John Noble, and they had a son, Stephen A. Noble, and several other children. In 1881 Jennie, her husband John Noble, and their children emigrated from Australia to Michigan and settled in Tuscola County where Jennie's parents and most of her siblings lived.

John's father Robert Kirk purchased eighty acres of timber land in Fairgrove Township, Tuscola County, that he cleared for farming. The land that is now Brookside Cemetery originally belonged to the Kirk family.

John married Margaret "Maggie" Drysdale in Bayfield, Huron County, Ontario, in 1873. Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada on March 28, 1850, she was the daughter of Robert Drysdale and Ann Jack, Scottish emigrants to Canada. Margaret's sister Elizabeth married John's brother William Kirk.

John and Margaret had nine children:

1) Sarah Isabelle (1874-1911), who married Elmer E. Jameson;
2) Robert Drysdale (1876-1943), who married Elizabeth B. Hanna;
3) Anna Jack (1878-1944), who married Bert Thurston;
4) Wylie Ralston (1881-1971), who married Effie M. LeValley;
5) Reid John (1883-1907), who married Edith S. McCloy;
6) Elizabeth Jane (1885-1968), who married Walter P. Davis;
7) James C. (1887-1968), who married Mary Margaret McCloy;
8) William Andrew (1889-?), who married Lillian J. McLeod;
9) George Allen (1892-1922).

In 1910 John and Margaret were living in Vassar, Tuscola County, Michigan.

John died on April 29, 1916 in Vassar, Michigan, and Margaret passed away on August 27, 1929. Both are buried in Brookside Cemetery in Fairgrove, Michigan.
