J. Leon Coleman was born in Dozier, Texas on February 15, 1913. He was the youngest of seven sons of John Scott Coleman and Sarah Leon Coleman. He married Mary Emalyne Blevins on June 9, 1933 in Hollis, Okla. He was the father of two sons, Ronald Leon and Mark Scott. Leon retired from the Oklahoma State Department of Health.

Leon was a life-long member of the Church of Christ. He started leading singing at age eight and continued to lead singing into his late eighties. He served as an elder at the 12th and Drexel congregation. He was a long-time member of the Edmond church of Christ where he led the 39ers Bible class.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, his beloved wife Mary Emalyne Coleman, his son Ronald and infant daughter Judy Lynn.

He is survived by his son Mark Coleman and wife Cindy, his daugher-in-law Nancy Coleman, five grandchildren: Christie Susan Coleman Wood and husband Dr. Kevin Wood of Edmond, Okla.; John Edward Coleman and wife Linda Coleman of Flower Mound, Texas; Sheri Lynn Coleman Dennis and husband Dr. Bruce Dennis of Fitztown, Okla.; Dennis Carl Coleman and wife Julie of Dallas, Texas, and Scott Moss Coleman and wife Jami of Ada, Okla. He is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren: Brian and Ciarra Wood; Emily, Rachel Leslie and Carter Coleman; Zachary, Holly, Coleman and Ryan Dennis; Lillie Coleman; and Rachel, Rosie, and Lawrence Coleman, and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to In Search of the Lord's Way or the Edmond Church of Christ Building Fund.

A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Friday, June 11, 2010 at Edmond Church of Christ. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
