Lillian was a member of the first graduating class of San Diego HS(then Russ HS) on June 15, 1883. She was a school teacher in San Luis Rey and National City,CA and was an assistant librarian at the Carnegie Library in San Diego.She took voice lessons from Mrs. Caroline Pettinos-Hall, and became an opera singer in the San Diego area before she returned to her career as a librarian. She carried a small revolver in her purse as all women on the library staff did at that time. She lived in her childhood home, the Whaley House, from 1909 to 1953.
