Esther Hedlin
Esther Cecelia Swanson was born on 8 November 1885 on her parent's farm in Alden Township Polk County, Wisconsin. This was located near Star Prairie, Wisconsin. Esther was the sixth of six children born to Ingeborg Belle (Olofsdotter) Olson and her husband Olaus (Svenson) Swanson immigrants from Sweden who settled in Wisconsin where they were married. Esther was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith at the Lutheran Church there. She attended school with her siblings and grew to adulthood in this place.
Her brother-in-law Rev. John Birger Sorenson answered the call to the Elmdale Swedish Lutheran Church in Niobe, North Dakota where he served from 1911 to 1916. It was during a visit to her sister (Ethelyn) and brother-in-law that she met Albin Hedlin a widower with two small children, Emma and Arthur. When she returned to Wisconsin they continued contact through correspondence. Esther accepted Albin marriage proposal and he went to Star Prairie, Wisconsin, where on December 16, 1914 they were married. They began their married life together on his homestead in Roseland Township, Burke County, ND. On April 5, 1915, she transferred her church membership from Star Prairie and became a member of the Elmdale Swedish Lutheran Congregation in Niobe. Their union was blessed with two children, Blanche and Warren.
The family was active in the Elmdale Lutheran Church and other community affairs. On August 2, 1943 they had an auction sale and retired from farming. They moved to Bowbells, ND in 1944 and in 1949 they built a new home in Kenmare, ND, where they lived until their deaths. Esther fell and broke her hip in July 1963 and was transferred to the Trinity Hospital in Minot, ND where she died three weeks later, August 23, 1963. Her funeral was held in the Elmdale Lutheran Church on August 27, 1963 and burial was in the Elmdale Swedish Lutheran Cemetery.
