Dick graduated from the Ocheyedan High School in 1933. He farmed nearly all of his life, before retiring in 1976. On July 14, 1967, Dick was united in marriage to Harriet Leonard Johnson in Spirit Lake. He enjoyed spending his spare time playing pool, riding snowmobiles, woodworking, playing cards and golfing, where he even hit a hole-in-one on his 80th birthday.
Dick is survived by his wife, Harriet Gildemeister of Spirit Lake; two daughters, Diane Dykema, and her husband, Dennis, of Spirit Lake, and Kathie Erbes, and her friend, Susan Goulding, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; a step-son, Russel Johnson, and his wife, Taffy, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; two step-daughters, Cathy Heinsius, and her husband, Chuck, of Cedar Rapids, and Marilyn Cravens, and her husband, James, of Sanborn; seven grandchildren and his five great-grandchildren, Lynn Ver Woert, and her children, Natalie and Allison, Mark Dykema, and wife, Shari, and their children, Jack and Jennifer, Chris Fowler, and wife, Jen, Elizabeth Cosier, and husband, Zac, and their daughter, Claire, Eric Johnson, Emilie Tack, and her husband, Jesse, and Katie Soto, and husband, Ramon. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Lula Steinbeck; a son, Dennis Dick Gildemeister; a brother, Arnold Gildemeister; and a sister, Phyllis Gildemeister.
A funeral service will be held Monday, April 27, 2009, at 10:30A.M. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake. Visitation will be held Sunday, from 2:00P.M. until 6:00P.M., with the family present from 4:00P.M. until 6:00P.M. at the Schuchert Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Ocheyedan Cemetery at 1:30P.M.
