Lankart Rites Held in Goliad on October 30

Attained Ripe Old Age of 84 Years, 7 Months and 17 Days at Time of Death.

Funeral services in charge of Rev. Edwin J. Hirsch, pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church of this city, were held on Wednesday afternoon, October 30, from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Lankart in this city, for A. M. Lankart, 84, who died at Gregory, Tuesday morning, October 29.

Interment was made in Glendale Cemetery. Active pallbearers were: Messrs. L. F. Metting, J. R. Staedtler, Henry Thuem, Walter Bergman, Chas. Bauch and John Lutenbacher.

Rev. Hirsch said the following in the sermon delivered during burial services held for the deceased:

"Adolph Mike Lankart was born in Germany, March 12, 1856. He was baptized in the Christian faith as an infant in the Lutheran Church of that country, and while still in the tender years of childhood was brought to this country, landing at Galveston in 1872.

"The Lankart family settled at Yorktown, and here the subject of our sketch grew to young manhood. Some time later Mr. Lankart went to the western part of the state, working around Brady. It was in Brady that Mr. Lankart met and married Miss Sally Wright. The young couple settled there, and to this happy marriage five children were born. One child died in infancy, and the others are as follows: Jess Lankart and Mrs. Annie Simmons, of Goliad, C. S. Lankart of Waco, and Mrs. Agnes Reaves.

"Further tragedy struck Mr. Lankart and his children when the mother died May 18, 1894. Soon after the mother's death, Mr. Lankart and his children moved to Goliad county.

"In 1896 Mr. Lankart married Miss Selma Franz of Fannin, the couple establishing a home near Fannin. This marriage the Lord richly blessed with eight children. They are: Mrs. Henry Moy of Victoria, O. E. Lankart of Gregory, A. O. Lankart of Carlsbad, New Mexico, Mrs. Mary Thomas of Corpus Christi, Louis Lankart of Aransas Pass, Preston of Bay City, Mrs. Leona Reaves of San Antonio and Mrs. Ed Ray of Corpus Christi.

"It was in 1911 that Mr. Lankart and his family moved to Goliad, settling on a farm near town. Once again the father and children suffered sorrow and bereavement in the loss of their mother, who died September 14, 1931.

"During his sojourn here, Mr. Lankart was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, and an upstanding citizen of the community. Finally, in the fall of 1937, Mr. Lankart retired from the farm and moved to Gregory to enjoy the last years of his life in rest and comfort.

"Mr. Lankart had been in poor health for the last three months. Last Friday he suddenly became fatally ill and surrendered his soul in death at 2:30 Tuesday morning, October 29, 1940, having attained the ripe age of 84 years, 7 months and 17 days.

"Bereaved and mourning his loss are all his children mentioned above, with the exception of Mrs. Agnes Reaves, who died Christmas Day, 1917. There also remain one half-brother, Ernest Waitschies of Schroeder, one half-sister, Mrs. L. P. Schultz of Victoria, 19 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren as well as other relatives and a host of friends."
