W.W. "Bill" Thompson, 90, Brainerd, passed away at Woodland Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd on April 29, 2008. Bill was born on Feb. 25, 1918, in Long Lake Township, Minn., to Robert and Hester (Caughey) Thompson. He married Sue Avelsgard on Nov. 23, 1946, in Brainerd. They were married almost 58 years until she passed away in 2004. He owned and operated W. W. Thompson Concrete Products until his retirement. He was a member of Park United Methodist Church in Brainerd, American Legion Post No. 255 in Brainerd, and the Scottish Rite of the Shriners. Bill was very active in the community over the years with many different organizations.
He was a US Army Veteran who served during World War II and the Korean War with the 194th Tank Battalion.
He is survived by his children: Todd (Roxanne) Thompson, Brainerd; Kay Meyer, Grand Rapids, Mich.; grandchildren, Brett Thompson, Sara Thompson and Michael Koering, all of Brainerd, and Alyssa Bok and Ian Meyer, Grand Rapids, Mich.; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Sue, son-in-law Len Meyer, two brothers and five sisters. Memorials are preferred to the Confidence Learning Center or Park United Methodist Church.
Services will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at the Park United Methodist Church in Brainerd with Pastor Rory Swenson officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Brainerd. Military rites will be provided by the American Legion Post No. 255 of Brainerd. Friends may call on Friday, from 5-8 p.m. at the Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Brainerd and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
