Frank was the youngest of five children born to Seth Frank & Lydia (Case) Roberts and was the grandfather of this contributor's wife. On October 21, 1891 in East Hartland, CT., he married Flora Louise Gaines and they were the parents of Guy Ruben Roberts, Paul Gaines Roberts, Vera Lydia (Roberts) Burch, Elna Mary ((Roberts)) (Burton) Cheetham, Maude Flora (Roberts) Knickerbocker and Frank Seth Roberts, Jr. In 1905, at age 34, while residing in Barkhamsted, Frank was elected to serve a term in the Connecticut State Legislature. He later owned and operated a combination butcher shop/grocery store in New Hartford, Connecticut and in 1915, while a resident of New Hartford, Frank was elected to serve a second term in the Connecticut State Legisture. While living in New Hartford Frank frequently assisted the local funeral director and learned the funeral/embalming trade from him. Eventually he decided that he wanted to enter the profession on his own & offered to buy the business of his mentor. His offer was declined & Frank began to look elsewhere for a suitable business to purchase. In 1917, while on a trip from New Hartford, Connecticut to Erie, Pennsylvania, Frank & Flora passed through Pine Plains, New York where a local businessman had both a furniture store & a funeral business for sale. After consulting with the business owner & his family Frank decided to purchase both establishments & move to Pine Plains. For the remainder of his working life he was a self employed funeral director in Pine Plains, New York.
Flora passed away in 1941 & in 1942 Frank married Nellie (Hemmingway) Buerman. There were no children from this marriage.
This contributor had the opportunity to visit Frank in his Pine Plains home on several occasions. He was an active person who enjoyed gardening and had a large (about three acres) garden behind his home which he maintained until he was well into his late seventy's or early eighty's. One of his favorite crops was popcorn, which he delighted in giving to his family and friends. It was a rare day indeed that a visit to Franks home would not be rewarded with large bowls of freshly popped popcorn appearing, seemingly from nowhere.
Frank died at 98 years, 3 months, and 14 days of age, in the Central Dutchess Nursing Home in Wappingers Falls, New York where he had been a patient for only a short time prior to his death. This nursing home was located on the same street as, and only several blocks south of, the home of Frank's son Frank Seth Jr. (This contributor & my wife, Frank's (Sr's) granddaughter, also reside at the time of this writing within two blocks of this nursing home). His grave in Pine Plains is located in the Roberts Family Plot & is next to the grave of his first wife, Flora. The cemetery is located within a half mile of Frank and Flora's former home in Pine Plains. His death was the result of advanced age.
