Seth was the oldest of three children born to Eli & Celia (Lane) Roberts. He was a great grandfather to this contributor's wife. On September 27, 1853 in Hartland, Connecticut he married Lydia Case and they became the parents of five children; Elna Roberts, Flora Roberts, Edna E. Roberts, Jane L. Roberts & Frank Seth Roberts. Seth's grandson, Frank Seth Roberts Jr., stated to me that he remembered his grandfather (Seth) being bedridden with arthritis during his later years. Frank was not aware of any photographs of his grandparents, Seth or Lydia, existing.
Seth farmed land near Barkhamsted, Connecticut, in an area that was eventually flooded by the United States Army Corps of Engineers in order to create the Barkhamsted Reservoir & the land that Seth farmed is now at the bottom of that reservoir. Seth died at 91 years, 7 months, and 2 days of age, at the home of his daughter, Flora (Roberts) Ripley in Winsted, Connecticut. He & Lydia were originally buried on their farm but while constructing the reservoir the Corps of Engineers had their graves relocated to the nearby Riverside Cemetery.
According to Frank S. Roberts Jr., his father , Frank S. Roberts Sr., who was also a funeral director, handled Seth's burial & the eventual re-burial of Seth, Lydia & their two daughters Edna & Jane who had predeceased them. Seth's casket was made from black oak. At the time of his death he was contorted into a fetal position by the arthritis that had plagued him during his twilight years. Upon exhumation the only remains located were a few bone fragments and the nameplate from Seth's casket.
