Anna Maria Volmer was born in Rottenburg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany the daughter of Johannes and Rosalia Munzer Volmer. In the spring of 1854, Anna Maria immigrated to the United States to join family members who had already immigrated. That fall, an old classmate from her school in Rottenburg, Maurice Bessinger arrived and they rekindled their friendship. They decided to join Maurice's brother in Hamilton, Onterio, Canada and were married at St. Mary's Church on May 8, 1855 and lived there until 1859 when his brother Charles who had accepted a offer to survey Freeborn, Co., MI decided to return to Germany and sold Maurice the land he had recd in Freeborn.

They were the parents of 9 children, Emma (Mrs. Frederick Leusman), John, Mary Ann (Mrs. Richard Bickell), Elizabeth (Mrs. Edgar Kelly) William, Henry, Anna (Mrs. Robt. Barragan), Franklin, Nettie (Mrs. Albert Skinner). Maurice and Anna Maria celebrated their 50th Wedding anniversary in 1905 with a large party of family and friends.

Anna Maria died in 1918, Maurice had preceded her in death in 1917 and they are buried in Graceland Cemetery.
