Mrs. Cherry, widow of Harry Cherry, was a member of Baron Hirsch Synagogue and Hadassah. She and her late son, Ruben Cherry, were co-owners of the old Home of the Blues Record Shop on Beale Street. Abram Schwab, owner of A. Schwab on Beale, said Mrs. Cherry and her son operated the record shop from the 1940s through the early 1960s, when they moved from Beale to Main. "It was located in the old M&M Building behind Pantaze's Drug Store," said Schwab. "They had a good trade. It was certainly the top record shop in the downtown area and maybe the largest in Memphis at the time. It was one of the first shops around where only records were sold." He said the shop began catering primarily to the blues audience, but made the transition to rock and roll in the early and mid-1950s. Schwab said Mrs. Cherry and her son issued several records under their own label. "They never had a hit. But they started trying about the same time that Stax and several others began." She leaves two brothers, Sam Goldstein and Max Goldstein, and several nieces and nephews. (Published in The Commercial Appeal, Memphis, Tn, on September 4, 1984)
