August Emile Feltz was born in Strasbourg, Alsace, France in the year 1835, son of Florentien and Mary Anne (Stupfler) Feltz. He settled in Bois Brule Township, Perry County, Missouri with his father and three brothers, Florence Jr., Emile, and Anthony, when the family moved there in 1855. August learning the same trade as his father, a Cooper, helped him in the local Mills in Perry County. At that time each large mill had its own cooperage. August also engaged in farming on this dad's property. When the Civil War started in 1861, August along with his three brothers enrolled in the Missouri Militia on August 10, 1862. He was ordered into service as a Private, 64th Regiment five days later on August 15. He served again on April 23, 1863 and finally on October 17, 1864.

August met Philomene Mary Gros, born October 6, 1849, daughter of Eloi August and Mary Claudia (Poirier) Gros, and they were eventually married on October 22, a865 at St. Mary's of the Barrens Catholic Church in Perryville, MO. The Feltz family resided outside Perryville on the same property with his his dad. The Feltz family resided outside Perryville on the same property with his dad, Florentine and his second wife, Mary Pauline (Appoline) Gros, who was an aunt of Philomene. August and Philomene were blessed with nine children; Mary Louise, Augustine Urban, Mary Justine, Mary Ellen, Ernest Louis, Dennis Vincent, Urban Joseph, and twins, Albertine Ann and Mary Magdalina. Having been reared in the Catholic faith they saw that their children wee taught the same beliefs and morals that comprise a good Christian home. August had a great musical ability and played the piano and several instruments, while Philomene was known to be an excellent seamstress throughout Perry County. In 1883 August was diagnosed with tuberculosis by his older brother, Dr. Florence Feltz Jr. He was admitted to the Missouri State Hospital at Fulton, MO. where out the rest of his life in the sanatorium ward and died October 15, 1901. Burial was in the Hospital cemetery. Philomeme continued to raise her children in Longtown and Perryville respectively. She died July 26, 1910 and is buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Perryville, Missouri.

On May 24, 2011 the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War performed a graveside ceremony and tombstone dedication for Pvt. August E. Feltz.
