GRANBURY - John Sidney Luton, 88, died Monday, October 30, 2000, at a Granbury hospital. Funeral: 2 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Granbury. Dr. Jack Riley will officiate, assisted by the Rev. John Robbins and Dr. Eugene Robertson. Burial: Granbury Cemetery. Memorials: First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 205 E. Pearl St., Granbury, Texas 76048; Granbury Volunteer Fire Department; Hood County Livestock Raisers; the Red Cross; or a charity of choice.
Mr. Luton was born in Fort Worth on April 10, 1912, to John Sidney and Octavia Moore Luton. He graduated from the old Central High School in 1929 and attended NTAC in Arlington until hard times forced him to leave school and go to work. He eventually worked in the oil field supply business in West Texas. In 1937, he married Doris Zweifel of Fort Worth. They lived in Midland until he became actively involved in oil production in Graham. In 1952 he built a home in Granbury, where he became a rancher and a banker. He participated in civic and church activities. The grandson of a circuit rider, he was a lifelong Methodist. For several years he was president of First National Bank of Granbury, and before his illness was chairman of First National.
Survivors: His wife of 63 years, Doris Luton of Granbury; daughters, Suzanne Luton Woodruff and husband, Forester of Renton, Wash., and Nancy Luton Tynan of Houston; son, John Henry Luton and wife, Marilyn of Granbury; grandchildren, Michelle Woodruff Berman and husband, Rob, of Seattle, Washington, John Woodruff of San Francisco, William Tynan of Houston, John Tynan of Houston, Christopher Tynan of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Jennifer Luton of Dallas, Elizabeth Luton of Stephenville, Monica and Kent Cooper of Frisco, Courtney and Matt Glenn of Edmond, Okla., and Matt Henderson of Granbury; great-grandchildren, Olivia Berman of Seattle and Madeline Cooper of Frisco; sisters, Louise Luton McCrary and husband, Giles, of Post and Emarie Luton Mann of Houston; sister-in-law, Genell Luton of San Antonio; nephews, Robert Luton of San Antonio and Giles McCrary Jr. of Lubbock; nieces, Mary McCrary of Lubbock, Jo Hill and husband, John, of Granbury, and Diane Schuster and husband, Bill of Denver City; and 10 great-nephews and great-nieces.
