He was a 1940 graduate of New London High School, graduated from LaFayette College in Easton, PA, with a degree in engineering and while in the military attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, VA. He retired in 1986 from P&H Cranes in Cedar Rapids after 30 years. He built homes with his father and brother, Harold "Squirt" in the New London area. He was a member of the New London Christian Church and was a 60 plus member of the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star. He enjoyed restoring cars, all car racing, especially NASCAR, football, traveling, family gatherings, and visiting with people.
He was a WWII Army Veteran serving in the Philippines where he was head of the message center. He is survived by one son William "WC" Cole, of New London; four step grandchildren; twelve step great grandchildren, one sister in law Dorothy Cole; one niece Brenda Alderson Davey; and one nephew Tom Cole; great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one brother, and one nephew, Jimmy Cole.
The funeral for Mr. Cole will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday June 9th, at Elliott Chapel, New London. Pastor Rod Cooper will officiate. Interment with military rights by the Henry County Honor Guard will be held in Burge Cemetery, rural New London. Visitation will begin at noon on Wednesday at Elliott Chapel. Masonic services will be at 5:30 p.m., with the family receiving friends following this to 7:30 p.m.
