Christian Friederich Gausmann was born in Schnathorst, Germany, a small village a few miles west of Minden. In September of 1852 he emigrated to America aboard the Ship Juno with his parents and several other German families from the Minden area. These families settled in an area east of Madison, Wisconsin along the boundary of Blooming Grove and Cottage Grove townships, now known as the community of Hope. It was there in 1861 that he married Caroline Christine Louise Meier, whose family was from the same area of Germany and had also emigrated to America in 1852, arriving in October aboard the Ship George.

The Gausmann's began their family in Cottage Grove, where Henry, Clara, Sarah and August were born. About 1872 they made their way to Seward County, Nebraska, following the Rolfsmeier's and accompanied by one of Louise's younger brothers, August Meyer. The family farmed land in both "I" and "J" precincts. Five more children were born in Nebraska, Charles Herman, William Herman, Alena, Ida, and Wille.

The family was among those that founded the St. Paul's Congregation in 1890.
