FORT LAWN - The Rev. Dr. Roy Samuel Parker, 80, passed away on Friday, June 10, 2011, at Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House.
Born in Long Shoals, N.C., on Sept. 1, 1930, he was the son of the late Rev. Roy Hunter and Maggie Myrtle Yarboro Parker. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Emma Flint Parker; brother, Robert "Connie" Parker; and sisters, Mary Ruth Parker Smith and Maxine Parker Webb.
He is survived by his wife, Dr. Sarah F. Stallings of Fort Lawn; daughter, Pamela Parker Revels and her husband, S. Wesley Revels, of Rock Hill; and brothers, Edward Parker of Forest City, N.C., and Nelson "Buddy" Parker of Charlotte, N.C.
The family thanks Dr. Myo Nwe and Dr. Sandeep Grewal who not only served as the Rev. Parker's physicians but also were kind and loving friends.
The Rev. Parker entered the U.S. Navy in 1948, and was discharged in 1952. He entered Central Wesleyan College (Southern Wesleyan University), receiving a Bachelor's degree in theology. He served in the Western North Carolina Conference of the Wesleyan Church for many years, including appointments to Old Fort-Mount Hebron, Rose Hill, Clyde, and Neighbor's Grove (Asheboro), all in N.C., and Rock Hill Wesleyan Church.
In 1968, he joined the staff at Southern Wesleyan University as a student recruiter, later becoming Dean of Student Life. He received his Master's in counseling from Clemson University and served on the Pickens County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Board. He held a Doctor of Ministry degree from Trinity Evangelical University.
The Rev. Parker was ordained into the Presbyterian Church of America and served as associate pastor at Westminster Presbyterian Church and was an early headmaster of the newly formed Westminster Christian School. He also worked as a fundraiser for Wycliffe Bible Translators.
In 1982, he became the pastor of Tega Cay Community Church, serving as pastor there for several years.
He received his airplane pilot's license while in Asheboro, N.C., and continued flying as a favorite pastime. He served on the Rock Hill Airport Commission and was a Lt. Col. in the Civil Air Patrol.
The Rev. Parker served as a supply minister for several area churches, including Bethesda Presbyterian Church, McConnells, S.C., and Zion Presbyterian Church, Lowrys, S.C.
In retirement years, he was employed in the security area for Piedmont Medical Center, a job that he enjoyed greatly and where he made numerous friends. His friendly demeanor greeted all that entered the main lobby at PMC.
A private graveside service will be held at Bethesda Presbyterian Church Cemetery, McConnells, S.C., with the Rev. Debra Quilling Smith officiating. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, June 13, 2011, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Rock Hill, with the Rev. Dr. Jack Basie and the Rev. Dr. Barry Eller presiding. The family will receive friends following the service in the church parlor.
