When he was 11 years old he went with his parents to Morgan county, Mo. He was married to Miss Lydia George in 1849. To them were born five children: two sons and three daughters. They went back to Ohio in 1864 and remained 4 years before returning to Missouri and settling in DeKalb County.
He served in the Provisional Enrolled Missouri Militia during the Civil War, serving in the 9th Co. B, and the 43rd Co. K.
Mrs. Lydia Slater died Sept. 6, 1898. Mr. Slater moved to Oklahoma Feb. 22, 1901. He died at the home of his son, five miles northwest of Thomas, ten days after being stricken with paralysis. He was 75 years, 10 months and 29 days. When he died, he was surrounded by all his children.
"Adam Slater was a good man, and what more need be said of anyone, living or dead. It is great to be good, and the old gentleman has gone to his reward. Peace to his ashes."
