Michael was a 1971 graduate of Lindbergh High School in south St. Louis County, and a 1975 graduate of Dartmouth College. Following graduation, Michael worked in New York for two years. He then accepted a position with an engineering firm in Iran where he worked from 1977-1979. Upon returning to New York, he worked as an economist with Alan Greenspan, until declining health forced his return to the St. Louis area. He was an avid supporter of Amnesty International, and had a strong interest in environmental issues.
