Barbara NAIMAN

A longtime Seattle resident, frequent volunteer and dedicated wife, mother, and friend, Barbara passed away unexpectedly at her home on December 30, 2006. Born in Inverness, Montana in 1918, she was one of seven children who learned the work ethic early. In 1942 she married Bert Naiman in Philadelphia, and in 1945 they moved to Seattle where their two sons were born. She was a talented seamstress and home decorator, who could turn a fistful of weeds into a lovely bouquet. Her crafts were so admired that she started her own business, Décor Hobby, and enriched hundreds of lives with her clever crafts and decorations, artistic floral arrangements, and preserved wedding bouquets. Barbara loved to travel and enjoyed taking local tours with her family and friends. Most of all, she loved to nurture people and make them happy. She consistently did both for family and strangers alike. Her sister, Emily, dubbed her "Little but Mighty", the powerhouse in such a small package. She was the "go-to" person the family relied upon, game for an adventure, always cheerful, and quick to laugh. She was especially known for generous donations of her time to worthy causes. As a dedicated member of the Altar Society of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Seattle, Barbara was the driving force in numerous projects for St. Catherine Church and School. Her creativity and enthusiasm were endless. She led volunteers in making crafts for fundraisers, donated floral arrangements she crafted with flowers from her own garden, and used her decorating skills to transform dull rooms into colorful spaces for events, including the annual St. Patrick's Day luncheon. She was a skilled cook, and her luscious home baked pies with flaky crusts were legendary. Several years ago, she spearheaded an ambitious project to bake and freeze fruit pies to sell at the annual fall bazaar. In 2006, her trained assembly line of volunteers prepared more than 400 pies. On Christmas night, Barbara hosted a warm, relaxed dinner for family and friends, and enjoyed joking with her guests. We mourn her sudden loss just days later, but are thankful she was healthy and vibrant until the end. She is survived by Bert, her loving husband of 64 years, and sons, Alan and Dan, both of Seattle. Her surviving siblings include Emily O'Reilly of Seattle, Ray Mangold of Federal Way, and Claire Stout of Carlsbad, CA. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, January 5th, at 9:00 a.m. at St. Catherine Church. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the St. Catherine Altar Society, 814 N. E. 85th St., Seattle, WA 98115. Hoffner Fisher & Harvey
