Sophie J. Stopper, 91, died of natural causes during the early evening hours of Friday June 24, 2011 in her Pennside residence.
Sophie was predeceased by her husband Anthony P. "Andy" Stopper on February 15, 1989.
Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Mary Ann (Ulatowska) Mish.
Sophie is survived by her three sons; John A. husband of Maureen Stopper, Reinholds; Andrew Stopper, Pennside; and Michael J. husband of Christine Stopper, Spring Twp.
Other survivors include eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Sophie was a 1941 graduate of Reading High School and attended Kutztown College. She was employed for 26 years by the Reading School District, working as a teacher's aide at Reading Southern Jr. High School until her retirement.
She was a parishioner of St. Catharine of Siena Roman Catholic Church, Exeter Twp.
Sophie was a Red Cross Water Safety instructor for 40 years; and she received many awards for being a swimming champion here in Berks County.
In 1953, Sophie was awarded a National Certificate by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, for her courage and heroism for saving a child's life at the former South of Penn Pool. Sophie also played on many championship volleyball teams here in Berks County.
A closed-casket visitation will be held on Thursday June 30, 2011 from 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. at St. Catharine of Siena Roman Catholic Church Chapel 2427 Perkiomen Ave. Mt. Penn PA 19606. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M.
Entombment will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery, Muhlenberg Twp.
The Kopicki-Bradley Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
