Mary Ann Ringelman, 86, of San Pedro, CA, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2012, in her room at the Little Sisters of the Poor, Saint Jeanne Jugan residence in San Pedro. Mary was born April 16, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois to parents, Jure (George) and Vinka Drazin, legal immigrants from Kastela, Croatia. Mary was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend to many who knew her. She is preceded in death by her husband, Fred; brother, Peter Drazin; and sister, Dorothy Sinagra. Mary leaves to cherish her memory, her son, Michael (Celeste) Ringelman of San Pedro; daughters, Patricia Ringelman of Los Angeles, Barbara (Kevin) LaLiberte of Keller, Texas; and brother, Louis (Gina) Drazin of Bermuda Dunes, CA; also her grandchildren, Duane Chavez, Lindsay Ringelman, Carly Ringelman, and Logan LaLiberte, along with several nephews and nieces. Although Mary came from meager beginnings, her parents indoctrinated her with an admiring work ethic, a life of integrity, and strong religious beliefs in the Lord. Mary attended school at Assumption Catholic School and Lindblom High School in Chicago. Her working career began in a pie factory and then later with Wrigley Chewing Gum Company in Chicago before moving with her parents to San Pedro, arriving in October of 1946. She continued her working career at French Sardine Company in Fish Harbor and then later at the J.J. Newberry store in downtown San Pedro. Through her volunteer work with the Catholic Maritime Club of San Pedro, she met her future husband, a merchant marine and fellow Chicagoan, Fred Ringelman. The young couple lived and raised their three children in San Pedro. As her children grew older, Mary began to volunteer her services to a variety of youth sports organizations. She became the concessionaire and snack shack lady at Midtown Little League at the old Boys Club field, the Cabrillo Bay Little League and Pony League at Bloch Field, the Bobby Sox Softball League at the Pistol Range, and Junior All-American Football League at Daniels Field. When her children entered high school, her selfless service to others continued as she continued her volunteer work as chaperone for the Youth Club dances in the Mary Star auditorium, and concessionaire for the football snack shack for Mary Star of the Sea High School. Even after her children had graduated, Mary continued to work for the parish and was offered a job as Parish Center coordinator. Many students in attendance at the Mary Star schools will remember Mary for admonishments when straying from rules and ethical behavior, and have subsequently thanked her for such guidance. No one escaped the watchful eye of Mrs. Ringelman. Mary was a victim of cancer and struggled with the disease for over ten years. Her strong will and determination allowed her to fight on through this and many other ailments and live to see her family grow another generation. The loves of her life were her grandchildren, who spent many a day and night over at Gramma Mary's house. There was always something special about a visit with gramma.
In recent years she received loving care from the staff and sisters of the Little Sisters of the Poor in San Pedro. Mary's family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in her honor be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor, 2100 South Western Ave, San Pedro, CA 90732. Visitation from 4-7 pm followed by a Rosary in Mary's honor will be held at the Little Sisters, Saint Jeanne Jugan residence in San Pedro on Thursday, January 12, 2012. Mass will be held Friday, January 13, 2012 at Mary Star of the Sea Church at 9 am followed by graveside services at Green Hills Memorial Park. Mary will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her. (Published Jan. 10 to Jan. 12, 2012 in the Daily Breeze, Torrance, CA)
