Louis J. Heins was born in Emporia, Kansas on June 25, 1919, the son of John C. and Dorothy Wessel Heins. He married Esther Wombolt at Olympia, Washington on March 24, 1943. She died December 5, 2006.
Surviving family members include: sons, Louis J. Heins, Jr. and Tom Heins, both of Emporia and Terry Heins, Americus, Kansas; daughters, Lois Tucker, Pam Avila and Mona Erickson, Emporia, Kansas, Susan Finney, Americus, Kansas, Debbie Hinrichs, Okarche, Oklahoma, and Linda Hinrichs, Tuttle, Oklahoma; one sister, Dorothy Miller, Emporia, Kansas; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Walker; five brothers, Charlie, Bill, Jack, Everet and Johnny Heins; and two grandchildren.
During World War II, Mr. Heins served as a 1st Lt. in Battery A, 591st Field Artillary, US Army in the campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, The Ardennes, The Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was a member of Lowry-Funston Post #1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion.
Louis was a member of Saint Mark Lutheran Church, Emporia.
Funeral services will be held at Saint Mark Lutheran Church, Emporia on Friday, July 1, 2011, at 1:30 P.M. conducted by Pastor John Davis of the church. Interment will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery with military honors provided by Lowry-Funston Post #1980, VFW, and Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion.
The family will receive friends at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home Thursday evening, June 30, 2011 from 7:00 PM until 8:00 PM
A memorial has been established with Hospice of Kansas. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
