Dirk Heÿen Eilerts was born 25 Dec 1823 in Timmel, district of Aurich, Lower Saxony to Andreas Dirks Eilerts and Antje Andressen. His baptism has not been found (which would state birth date), but the birth date above is repeated in his 1856 and 1860 marriage records. Dirk's family were of Frisian ethnicity and their ancestry has been traced to the mid-17th Century in the Aurich region.

Dirk firstly married Ockje Hinrichs Bohlson on 21 Dec 1856 in at the Lutheran church in Hanover. She bore a daughter, Antje, and then died in 1858. Dirk secondly married Antje Ehmen Osterbuhr 10 years his junior and also a native of Timmel. Antje bore five more children before 1875, when the entire family emigrated to the United States.

Settling in Royal, Champaign County, near other Frisian immigrants, Dirk and his family farmed and were members of St. John's Lutheran Church. Dirk died in 1894 after writing his will on November 17th of that year. His widow outlived him by 30 years.
