Martha Cilley Bouton Cilley Clarke, born in Concord, NH to Rev and Dr. Nathaniel & Elizabeth Ann Cilley Bouton. Her mother was a Cilley, which is her middle name and she married a Cilley. Her father was a Bouton.
Her first marriage was to Jacob G. Cilley who was her 4th cousin, she had two children which can be studied further by their links to Martha. Jacob died in 1870.
She took her son Harry and moved to Europe which she lived for several years returning to the US live in Washington, DC, and settling in Cambridge, Ma.
She married Arthur Eastman Clarke, whose father owned the Daily Mirror and a Publishing company.
It was said that she was a woman of rare social ability with a gift for entertaining who is the unquestioned leader of many distinguishing circles. She is a lifetime member of the Cambridge, Ma Shakespear Club, She was one of the first 2 regents of the Chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution which she founded in Massachusetts. Upon return to NH, she assumed a leading position of the DAR. In 1895 she formed the Ladies Aid and Relief Society and in 1890 was appointed by Mrs. Benjamin Harrison wife of the President state regent of the DAR. She also founded the Colonial Dames of NH where she was President until her death. She was also President of the Audobon Society and President of the Animal Rescue League.
They lived in a home on North River Rd which was previously by Elizabeth Stark, it was destroyed in 1922 and has been uploaded to this site. This writer is still searching for a photo of her.
She was 10 years older than Mr. Clarke and her son Harry lived with them until her death in 1926, in the 1930 census she was a boarder in Manchester.
