George Weisgerber, 85, of Alliance, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008, at the Western Nebraska Veterans Home at Scottsbluff.
George was born on July 5, 1922, at Grand Island Ne, the son of Jakob and Marie (miller) Weisgerber. As a young child, he lived in Lincoln Ne, moving to Bayard in 1928.
He worked in the beet fields and farmed. He entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and served during WWII and Korea, in the Philippines and Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1951 while serving state side.
He returned to Bayard and farmed, moving to the Sidney NE. area where he worked at the Sioux Ordinance Depot. In 1955, he moved to Alliance and farmed with his dad and brothers. He worked for Newberry's ace hardware, Montgomery Ward, and eventually CB&Q Railroad, now BNSF Railway, for 30 years.
He married Audry May Cline on July 30, 1947, at Bridgeport Nebraska. He was confirmed into Hope Congregational Church at Bayard, but attended the Bayard Church of Christ and First Christian Church at Alliance with his family. George was a member of The American Legion Post #200 of Bayard.
Survivors include his wife, Audry; children, Sharon (Dean) Fraedrich, Raymond (Luayne) Weisgerber and Judy Franklin all of Alliance; grandchildren, Rosemary (Francisco) Lopez, Christopher Fraedrich, Brandy Weisgerber, George (Rashl) Franklin, Charles Franklin and Sabrina Franklin of Alliance, Jakob Weisgerber and Morgan (Cheril) Butcher of Grand Junction, Co.; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his sister, Mary (Bob) Walker of McCloud, Okla.; brother Bob Weisgerber of Bayard; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents Jakob & Marie, brothers John, Elmer and Jerry and Sisters Amelia New, Marty Erdman, and Katherine Weisgerber.
