OBITUARY, August Earl Freier

Hawkeye (Special)--August Earl Freier, 84, of Hawkeye, died at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Aase-Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah where he had been hospitalized since December, 1963. He was born in Germany on April 7, 1881 to Henry and Amelia Freier and came with his parents to Cedar Falls at the age of two, where he made his home until two years ago.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby, two step children, Sally Lopez, Hawkeye, and John Dempster of Rockford, Ill.; and four grandchildren, Joseph and John Lopez and William and Thomas Dempster. He is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Mae Lunn, Cedar Falls; Mrs. Christine Benson, Long Beach, Calif.; and Mrs. Ralph Ebersold, Long Beach, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Otto.

He was a registered pharmacist for over 50 years and owned and operated the Pfeiffer Company in Cedar Falls from 1912 to 1928 when he retired. After his retirement he participated in many community affairs. He was chairman of the Relief Board during the depression of the 1930s, chairman of the Community Chest in the early days in Cedar Falls. He also served as secretary of Cedar Valley Savings and Loan for many years and on its board of directors.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye with Pastor Andrew Oppedahl and Pastor Roger Peterson of Clairmont officiating. Mrs. Louis Fritz, jr. and Mrs. Arnold Raatz sang "My Hope is Built on Nothing Less" and "Abide With Me" accompanied by Mrs. William Wenthe at the organ. Pallbearers were Lee Palmer, Verle Palmer, David Appelman, Rodney Roggensack, Berl Henderson, and Douglas Appelman. Interment was in the Greenwood cemetery at Cedar Falls.
Emerson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

HAWKEYE (Special) -- Funeral services for August Freier, 83, will be held Thursday, April 8, at Trinity Lutheran church in Hawkeye at (1?) p.m. He died Tuesday at a Rest Home in Decorah.
Mr. Freier, a prominent Cedar Falls druggist, had retired to a Hawkeye farm two years ago.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby, three sisters, two stepchildren and four grandchildren. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery, Cedar Falls.
