William was born in the Worms colony, South Russia (now Ukraine). He came to America with his family in 1878 and settled on a farm about nine miles northwest of Sutton, Nebraska.
He married Margaretha Klein on January 20, 1887 in Sutton, Nebraska.
In 1917 William owned five horses, six cattle and an Oakland car.
In 1918, William, his wife and youngest daughter (Johanna) moved to Sutton.
William lost one of his eyes as the result of a buggy accident. He had a glass eye to replace the one he lost. When he would stay with his daughter and her family, he would tease his grandchildren by removing his glass eye and popping it back in, saying, "I bet you can't do this!"
