Chaumont Resident, 96, Had Heart Attack – Rites To Be Wednesday.
Chaumont, Dec. 30. – Mrs. Mary E. Van Doren George, 96, of Washington Street, widow of Henry L. George, died this morning at 3:30 in the House of the Good Samaritan, Watertown.
She had been admitted to the hospital Dec. 4, after suffering a heart attack. Prior to that time, she had been cared for at the family home by a daughter, Mrs. Gilbert Ainge, formerly of California.
The funeral will be Wednesday afternoon at 2 in the family home, with Rev. Thomas J. Carlisle, pastor of the Stone Street Presbyterian church, Watertown, officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Grove cemetery.
Mrs. George is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Gilbert (Fannie) Ainge, Chaumont; three sons, Emerich A. George, Chaumont; Dr. Wendell D. George, Watertown; Dr. H. Louis George, jr., Watertown; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was born December 27, 1867 in Three Mile Bay, a daughter of Abraham and Mary Nellie Van Doren. Mrs. George was a member of the first graduating class of the Three Mile Bay School, in 1885. In the fall of 1885, she entered Adams Collegiate institute, studying the classical course. She graduated in 1888.
On Dec. 25, 1895, she was married to Henry L. George, of Chaumont, a son of Frederick and Sabine Emerich George, who came here from Germany. Mr. George died on Nov. 11, 1934.
He and his brother, John F. George, were founders of the George Brothers’ Hardware store, in this village.
In March, the Chaumont Presbyterian church dedicated the second service of that month to the honor of Mrs. George, an 81-year member of that congregation.
Mrs. George had joined that church March 10, 1882.
