He was born Dec. 22, 1914, near Utica, S.D. in Yankton County, a son of the late Joseph and Katie (Luft) Borgheiinck. He was baptized in St. Agnes Church (the Siegel Church), Utica, northwest of Yankton, S.D., and was confirmed at St. Mary's Church, Beardsley, Minn.

He attended country school in Yankton County, then Langford, S.D. from September-March 1925-26, Marshall County from 1926-29, then District 35 in Traverse County, Minn.

On Sept. 25, 1944, Martin was united in marriage to Frances Caroline Slater at St. Mary Catholic Church in Beardsley, Minn. After 64 years of marriage, Caroline preceded him in death Jan. 30, 2009.

The couple farmed north of Beardsley from 1944-62, then moved to a farm near Ortley, S.D., on Sept. 25, 1962, until the farm was sold and they semi-retired June 1, 1978, when they moved to Milbank. Along with his wife as janitress, Martin was janitor at Central United Methodist Church, Milbank, for 12 1/2 years until June 1995.

Over the years he had served as an assessor in Windsor Township (north of Beardsley) for two years, was on the School Board as treasurer for a country school in Windsor Township for two-three years and did land measuring for ASC to check acres farmers had for two years.

He had been a member of St. Mary's Parish, Beardsley; St. Anthony's Parish, Browns Valley, Minn.; Immaculate Conception Parish, Waubay, S.D.; and has been a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank for the past 33 years.

He worked on Liebe Farms north of Milbank for 13 years from summer 1978-91 (age 76 when he quit) and was chaperone of Milbank Skating Rink for about eight years retiring in 1995, and did carpenter work off and on during his retirement years. During his farming years, he did considerable custom work
-- swathing grain, picking corn, combining and snow scooping (an awful lot, he said) and hay stacking with the Farmhand.

He enjoyed watching television, driving, sightseeing, and visiting and reminiscing among old places and old neighbors. He is remembered for his colorful stories and reminiscences of long ago, and his yodeling.

Survivors are four sons: Victor (Linda), Laughlin, Nev.; Ervin of Dickinson, N.D.; Wayne of Watertown, S.D. and Dennis (Athenia) of Fairmont, W.Va.; four daughters: Patricia (Thomas) Pibal, Sheboygan Falls, Wis.; Lucille Speidel, Aberdeen, S.D.; Anita Reiprich, Webster, S.D. and Catherine (Loren) Rumpca of Coon Valley, Wis.; 23 grandchildren, one step grandson, 10 great-grandsons, five great-granddaughters, one step great-grandson and two step great-granddaughters; four sisters: Julia Billiet of Osseo, Minn.; Elizabeth Pelzer of Cold Spring, Minn.; Clara (Eldred) Schriefels of St. Cloud, Minn. and Catherine Rausch of Long Prairie, Minn.; two brothers: Richard Borgheiinck of Browns Valley, Minn., and Clarence Borgheiinck of Winthrop, Minn.; sisters- and brothers-in-law: Margaret Borgheiinck, Randall, Minn.; Kathleen Borgheiinck, Browns Valley; Betty Borgheiinck, Lindstrom, Minn.; Agnes Paul, Lemmon, S.D.; Lorraine (Mike) Kuntz, Harding, Mont.; Loretta Grossnickle, Portland, Ore.; Sally Slater, Hettinger, N.D.; John Slater of California; Arthur (Billie) Slater, Ft.
