Pastor Chellew was born December 10, 1906, Oseola Township, Michigan, and attended Concordia High School, Milwaukee, Wi.; Concordia College, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri. He was ordained into the holy ministry at Hubbel, Michigan on July 28, 1930. His first charges were Arpin, Vesper, and Seneca Corners, Wisconsin, where he served for nearly 12 years. He then became active in the Indian Missions of Wisconsin, Pastor Chellew served for a number of years on the Press and Publicity Committee of the North Wisconsin District, and Pioneered vacation Bible school work, and the use of visual aids in Christian education. He was called to Zion Lutheran Church, Ayrshire, where he was installed on April 26, 1953. He was installed in November of 1958 as pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church, Rural Osage, Iowa. He then became Pastor at St. Paul's Lutheran, Leola, and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Long Lake, South Dakota, in 1962.
He was pastor to those two congregations until his death in October, 1963.
He was survived by his wife, Ida Marie Chellew, Leola, South Dakota; 4 sons, William Arthur (Joyce) Chellew, Richard James Chellew; Lowell Edward (Joan) Chellew; Robert John Chellew; daughters, Marie Ellen (Roy) Ferg, Janet May (Donald) Loomis; Lorna Jean (John) Hannah; Dorothy Ann (Keith) Brutlag, Valetta Ruth (Lyle) Schaible, ; Helen Rita (Roger) Harms; and Carol Louise Chellew; 8 grandsons and 8 granddaughters.
